Statement:

These pieces are an investigation of composition and material applied on a harmonious form. The surfaces exhibit a variety of approaches, but carry through them attention to nuance, to detail, and pursuit of sculptural objects that create visual peace. In particular, there are 3 styles:

Parabolas – Parabolas are sneaky. They have a languid curve that approaches a point. As they near the point, their curve intensifies. They skate past the point, teasing the mind and offering no conclusion to our anticipation. Their tension is undeniable. Their visual balance is mathematically perfect. For me, they are a beautiful enigma.

Rome Rubbings – In 2016 I engaged in field research across Rome. I went to investigate sacred structures. I found myself distracted by the patterns and textures of the spaces I had gone to experience. I took rubbings as record. For 4 years these rubbings have traveled with me, mentally and physically. The rubbings were the result of taking notice, allowing attention to guide, and to observing with curiosity. The Breathe Before forms resonate with me in the same way. Therefore, many of the surface motifs are drawn from those rubbings.

Textural Designs – These pieces require the quietest of attentions. They reward the viewer for their time. The designs are derived both from parabolas and the rubbings, however, they do not rely on materials to be apparent. In these works, I am pushing the limits of quiet and allowing nuance to be the focus.

Most recently, these pieces were combined into an installation in my solo exhibition titled “Forever chasing Shadows”. The pieces were finished with 18 different terra sigillata colors to create subtle temperature shifts. It resulted in a delightful visual undulation that was both exciting and peaceful.
